I
n response to the article in the last issue on Miniatures choking,
one of our mares had a recent choking episode that did not resolve
itself with normal treatments. Our vet contacted a local university
and what they suggested using was the drug Oxytocin. (commonly
known by the brand name Pitocin®) It is generally used to induce
labor and stimulate milk release after delivery for pets and horses. It is
often given to help during labor as it affects the soft tissue muscles, the
same type that is involved when a horse is choking. Not funny then,
but what my vet had to do was race back to the small animal clinic
and grab ‘cases’ of small IV bags (dosage for dogs) to use on our mini
mare. After running all the IV bags of the Oxytocin the choke cleared!
Please tell everyone you know and remember to ask your vet to use it
if your horse presents with a choking episode. My mare was literally
on deaths door and was saved by my vet who cared enough to research
and find out what new treatments were available.
