e tend to use beauty as a process
for selection in many aspects of
our lives. It’s been my experience
the horses we consider beautiful and eventually purchase, can take us under their spell so
strongly we are sometimes unable to recognize their shortcomings. We become “barnblind.” Case in point- my senior mare- who
to me is just as lovely on the inside (maybe
even more so) than she is on the outside.
Fortunately, my farrier gently reminds me
that her less than perfect conformation and
slight club foot make her an unlikely candidate for reproduction. (And I must also
remember my days of raising foals and handling young horses are in my past). Common
sense reigns and I suppress the urge to replicate the qualities in her that I most admire.
survived and continue to produce winning
horses today. In my book, they are truly
amazing! Their obvious ability to evolve is
proven when you see the beautiful creatures
they’ve produced – many of which will stand
before you at the 2015 World Show.
It brings to mind how difficult it must have
been for early AMHA breeders to choose
their bloodlines and select individuals when
the monetary fad was to breed the tiniest of
tiny Miniatures. I, for one, am proud to look
back at where AMHA came from. There are
a handful of those early breeders who have
Time marches on and soon it will be winter and the joys that season brings. With a

Likewise for me, it was a proud moment to
see the majority vote overwhelmingly at last
year’s annual meeting to begin the Heritage
Grand classes. And although some might
not agree, I believe it is time to reward the
smallest horse who also possesses the best,
near perfect conformation. As we embark
down this new path, perhaps we can all learn
to evolve without compromising what the
breeders before us worked so hard to accomplish.

I look forward to cooler temps here in Texas
and a bit more barn time with my horses. I
tend to get carried away with the brushing,
bathing and grooming until I’m rewarded
with a deep sigh and an imagined “roll of the
eyes” from my mare. I forget she does not
ordinarily appreciate being pampered. So we
compromise. She receives a treat when she
nickers at me and I try to allow her to be a
horse, most of the time.
Happy Fall!
