Working to Future-Proof the Manufacturing Sector
Lt . Governor Garlin Gilchrist II , Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity ( LEO ) Director Susan Corbin , LEO Director of Employment & Training Stephanie Beckhorn and Michigan Economic Development Corporation ( MEDC ) Director of International Trade Natalie Chmiko joined MMA and southwest Michigan manufacturers this summer in Battle Creek for an interactive discussion focused on finding ways to help industry evolve and transition to new advanced technologies by accessing the capital they need to modernize their equipment and upskill their workers .
MMA continues to work closely with the Whitmer Administration and legislative leaders to identify solutions and resources to support manufacturers as they work to drive the state ’ s economic recovery and to position the industry for success in the future .

Governor Vetoes Business Tax Deduction for State and Local Taxes Paid
An MMA-supported bill that would allow companies organized as “ flow-through ” entities to deduct state and local taxes in the same way “ C-corporations ” are allowed to under federal law was vetoed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer . House Bill 4288 ( Representative Mark Tisdel , R-Rochester Hills ) would have paved the way for the federal deduction without impacting state revenues . The veto letter from the Governor cited concerns about the cost of technology to implement the tax break .
