House Approves MMA- Supported CON Solution
The House passed legislation that would create a pilot program to provide positron emission tomography ( PET ) scanner services while avoiding a carve-out of Michigan ’ s costsaving Certificate of Need ( CON ) process . Senate Bill 440 ( Senator Winnie Brinks , D-Grand Rapids ) initially would have created a blanket carve-out but was amended following MMA intervention to allow a pilot program to move concurrently with the CON process .
PET scanner services could begin at BAMF Health ’ s new Grand Rapids headquarters scheduled to open in 2022 . Once the CON Commission adopts final PET scanner standards , the project would have to apply for a CON within six months in order to continue providing PET services .
The bill has been enrolled by the Senate and is expected to be officially presented to Governor Gretchen Whitmer shortly .
UI Work Registration & Work Search Locked Into Law
The Legislature passed Senate Bill 501 ( Senator Ken Horn , R-Frankenmuth ), an MMA-supported bill that requires individuals to register for work with a Michigan Works ! agency after applying for unemployment benefits . This marks the first time that Michigan Works ! will be in law as the official employment assistance agency that claimants must use .
Additionally , the bill improves the ability of employers that have a temporary layoff to protect their workers by waiving the work search requirement during a short layoff .
This bill , which is part of a larger effort to address the state ’ s talent crisis , was sent to Governor Gretchen Whitmer ’ s desk late in June .
