Secure Your Annual
PPT Tax Exemption
MMA worked tirelessly to
eliminate manufacturing’s
Personal Property Tax (PPT),
saving manufacturers more than
$1.5 billion since 2016! This tax
cut does not occur automatically,
you must file Form 5278 by
February 20, 2019.
MMA developed the PPT
Savings Tool Kit — an online
resource with the tools and
information you need to claim
your savings. Go to mimfg.org/

Smart Vision Makes
Smart Investment in
Norton Shores Paid Leave Revisions
on the Horizon; Watch
mimfg.org for More
The Muskegon County-based
lighting manufacturer, Smart
Vision Lights, will be moving
into a new 36,000-square-foot
facility in Norton Shores.
Moving into a space nearly
three times the size of its current
location, this $4 million investment
for the future includes land
improvements, furniture and
fixtures, machinery and equipment.
It will also allow for more jobs,
moving the company’s employee
count from 29 to between 35-40.
“We want to keep the business
in Muskegon County,” said Dave
Spaulding, Smart Vision president.
“Our workforce — our talent —
is here. If you’re building a car
and you want to check the quality
of components as they’re going
through the assembly line, our
lights illuminate for those
cameras as they go through.”
The new space is expected to
be completed this summer. Last month, outgoing
Governor Rick Snyder signed the
paid medical leave revision bill,
Senate Bill 1175 (Senator Mike
Shirkey, R-Clarklake) — now
Public Act 369 of 2018. His
signature was the culmination of
many months of work in con-
straining out-of-state interests
from damaging Michigan’s
business climate.
PA 369 of 2018 will make
paid medical leave work for
Michigan by achieving four
primary goals:
• Align with Applicable
Federal Law
• Allow Flexibility and
Respect the Employer/
Employee Relationship
• Keep Michigan Competitive
• Preserve Reasonable
Paid Medical Leave
MMA will be working
throughout 2019 to provide
manufacturers information on the
best ways to comply with the new
law, including a session on the
subject during MMA’s brand-
new MFG Operations Confer-
ence on 3/7/19 in East Lansing.
