There are so many horror stories of people having botched aesthetic treatments, how can you check if the person treating you is a properly qualified doctor?

Debbie Jones, Newcastle

Any doctor working in the UK should be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), which ensures that all doctors are up to date with their training. Go to the GMC website, where can check on the status of any doctor and discover if there are any disciplinary proceedings.

Aesthetics and cosmetic training does require additional training, so do not be afraid to ask about that too.

I am a redhead and never get a tan - even spray tans leave me orange. I am wondering if tanning injections might help? Or is there another way I can get a glow to my skin?

Brenda McGuire Belfast

Tanning injections such as Melanotan 11 and the like have not been clinically proven so it’s not something we would recommend.

Over-tanning is one of the worst things you can do for your skin, next to smoking. Always wear a good sunblock on your face – at least factor 30.

However, we all need vitamin D, so getting some sunlight is essential. In the winter, supplements might be needed.

Getting a tan is more difficult for a redhead so when on holiday try P20 - apply an hour before you go out and take the sun sensibly. Be sure not to overdo it and stay in the shady areas, as you’ll still get some sun.

One tip is to go to a good make-up counter and get a foundation and bronzer that match your skin tone and will give you that sun-glow look.
