Continuing the legacy of The Doman Method

By Elise Quevedo

Glenn Doman once said “Every child has at the instant of birth a greater potential intelligence than Leonardo Da Vinci ever used”

We are forever studying the evolution of the mind and if there is one area I believe we need to be educating on more, is how the brain of special needs children can be developed further. The Doman Method is a revolutionary program that has been around for decades and has changed the lives of many families.

The most effective way to reach the best results is for the parents of special needs children to do the program at home by themselves, teaching them everything necessary and maintaining constant contact with the families. Courses, conferences and visits are constantly updated by the staff to ensure that parents can always offer the best service to their children.

So today I talk to the grandson of Glenn Doman, Spencer Doman, one of the family members who carry his legacy today.

Spencer, how was The Doman Method created?

My grandfather, Glenn Doman, was a physical therapist. He learned through experience in treating stroke patients that the therapies he had been taught in school were not effective in treating the root cause of the problems that his patients were facing. He knew that his patients had suffered damage to their brain, but the therapies he was using were only try to address the symptoms, instead of the problem within the brain itself.

Because of this, his patients were not improving. He began to develop his own techniques to help treat the brain directly, and his patients began to improve. As he worked more with children, he found that he could get much better results with the patients if he taught parents how to do these treatments intensively at home. He took his knowledge and used it to teach parents how to help their children who were brain injured.

Who is The Doman Method for and how can it help special needs children?

This is a very important question, because, for parents of children with special needs there is a great deal of confusing information out there. We can help children with a wide range of diagnosis, including Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, ADD, ADHD, PDD-NOS, mental retardation, learning problems, developmental delay, epilepsy along with many other common labels that are use for children with brain injury.
