A ROMANTIC REVELATION,   ESCAPE  FOR A NIGHT, A DAY OR A WEEK, INTO A SCOTTISH BARONIAL PAST  -  GLORIOUS GUEST WING AT ABBOTSFORD, HOME OF SCOTLAND’S MOST FAMOUS SON,

SIR WALTER SCOTT

How do we remember that literary giant, Sir Walter Scott, today?   His 60 metre Gothic monument in Edinburgh dominates the city, the second largest memorial to a writer in the world.  But Abbotsford, the country house Scott built on the banks of the Tweed, the first in Scottish Baronial style,  is a true expression of his character.  He called the house ‘rambling, whimsical and picturesque.’

He masterminded every detail of the building, by architect William Atkinson, who remodelled Chequers, and interior decoration by David Drummond Hay, who redesigned Holyrood House for Queen Victoria.

The house stands on a 110 acre estate,  surrounded by formal gardens and sumptuous woodlands, planned and laid out by Scott himself.   He loved planting trees, described by  Sir Walter Scott’s fan club as an ‘expert forester.’
