I am quite distressed as I have quite a large Lipoma on the back of my neck. The doctor I went to see says that removing it will be difficult and will leave a deep scar. People point it out at the gym and ask what it is. Is there anything that can be done that does not involve surgery?

Steven, what you are referring to is a common accumulation of fat cells that affects both men and women, and the causes of which are mostly genetic. The best option for treating the problem is to have local fat injections that removes the need for surgery. It is a quick procedure that only requires a local anesthetic. Karen, you are probably referring to osteoarthritis, a very common condition of the joints caused by wear and tear as a result of ageing. There are a number of options to treat this, ranging from simple painkillers, to steroid injections directly into the joints, to joint injections using specially formulated hyaluronic acid. If your friend's mother had treatment at an aesthetics clinic, I can only assume that they had "mesotherapy", a specially formulated mixture of amino acids and vitamins, as well as pain relief medication that was injected into the skin above the painful joints. This has also been proven to help joint pain. Mesotherapy for joint pain is very popular in continental Europe, Canada and Australia, however, it is not available in the UK.
