For  several  years now I have been having steam-based facials and extractions. Recently my nose and cheek areas have become covered in broken veins. A friend at work said it might be caused by the extractions...either way, what can be done to get rid of the veins?Sherrie Walker Dundee

Steam, skin trauma, overly spicy food, smoking, alcohol, hormones and pregnancy can all contribute to broken veins. There are various treatments on the market, with laser a popular choice. It works by using a specific wavelength light over the red veins to heat the blood in order to damage it. By doing this over two to six weeks, the capillary breaks down and the body lymphatic system will remove it.

My favourite is a treatment called OFF (small electrode with electric current) which gives very good results for facial thread veins. The results tend to last longer than laser.

You could also try treating your face with a gentle skin exfoliating polish or instant pore refiner. We like Zo Skin Health by Zein Obagi.

My face always looks just awful after a long haul flight. I am going to Australia with my boyfriend of nine months to to see his parents who live in Sydney. Is there anything I can do to stop me frightening them when I arrive?

The most important thing you can do during the flight is to drink plenty of water - and lay off the booze.

Try to order low fat meals, which are usually on offer on long haul flights as they will make you feel less groggy.

Take a silk pillowslip with you to cover your pillow or headrest as this will stop your hair from becoming too static, along with a silk eye mask to prevent marking around the eyes. If you have long hair it’s also a good idea to tie it up.

Remove all your make-up off at the start of the flight and apply Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour cream liberally on your face and hands. It’s a favourite of many models and celebrities who frequently take long haul flights.

An hour before landing remove any excess moisture from your face, apply your makeup and untie your hair. Pop a bit of Eight Hour cream on your lips, put a couple of Eye Dew Dazzle drops in your eyes and you’ll look like a real supermodel when you touch down in Sydney!
