If Don’s Drive-In in Livingston were open today, it might triumph in the
Readers’ Choice categories of Favorite Diner, Bang-for-the-Buck, Burger
Joint and/or Place to See and be Seen. Don Roth opened the popular
eatery at S. Orange and Hobart Gap Roads in 1955, offering an indoor
dining experience as well as classic car-hop service; in 1967, he copy-
righted the “pizza burger.” Besides running a business that endured for
40 years, Roth got something else out the experience: he met his wife
Carol, who waitressed there, and whom he married in 1959.
