home A HOME WITHIN A HOME Short Hills estate has dream-worthy self-contained living quarters WRITTEN BY CINDY SCHWEICH HANDLER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF SHORT HILLS DESIGN STUDIO T he rooms featured in this photo spread would dazzle any prospective home- owner, which makes the fact that most of them are part of a guest suite even more remarkable. When the current owner purchased his Short Hills resi- dence for $10 million, he hired Zak Yossry and Lev Kigel of Short Hills Design Studio in Millburn to create a private living space on a part of the second floor that’s accessible to the main house via a hall- way. The result is an elegant kitchen/multi-purpose room, bedroom (not updated, so not included here), changing area and walk-in closet. And just so his family could enjoy the decorative reboot as well, the homeowner commissioned Yossry and Kigel to install a sparkling new basement bar, too. KITCHEN AS COMMON ROOM The client wanted the kitchen — one of three in the home over- all — to include a sitting area, dining table, desk, separate coffee and wet bar, TV and hidden walk-in pantry, says Yossry. “Using an off-white color scheme helped blend the existing coffered ceiling with the walls’ new architectural millwork and cabinetry design,” he says. “This created a unique, uninterrupted transition from ceiling to walls.” The cabinetry is made by Canadian manu- facturer Downsview, and reflects the ceiling’s bold geometric lines. A fireplace and TV were added to create “a cozy focal point,” and a coffee and wet bar area is set between the living area and sleeping suite. MILLBURN & SHORT HILLS MAGAZINE SPRING 2019 29
