Fifty years ago, Paper Mill Playhouse presented its production of
Mister Roberts, a play that had been turned into a movie; film star
John Gavin performed in the title role that Henry Fonda defined in the
film version. From March 29 through April 29, a musical version of the
1973 film The Sting takes the stage at Paper Mill. It stars Harry Connick,
Jr. as Henry Gondorff, in the role originated by Paul Newman. Henry
Fonda and Paul Newman co-starred as Henry and Hank Stamper in
the 1970 movie Sometimes a Great Notion. How many degrees of
separation is that? It doesn’t matter. We enjoy the interplay between
screen and stage that Paper Mill brings its audiences.
