Looking Back

Dressing for Success Circa 1964

Stores go in andout of business in our town but therealwaysseems to be at least onestore devotedtodresses in downtown Millburn. This is a photo of the interior of the Marx Department Store, owned by Samuel B. Marx, which was first locatedat326 Millburn Avenue, and then at 313 Millburn Avenue, at the corner of Millburn Avenue and Lackawana Place. The store was in business from 1928 to 1964. Dresses like those pictured might be making a comeback: In the current film,“ Hidden Figures,” and the show,“ The Babylon Line,” both of which took place inthe 1960’ s, the female characters wore dresses similar to those pictured here, and Michelle Obama wore a similar, A-line, belted, short-sleeved burgundy dress by Jason Wu to President Trump’ s inauguration.
