Anuptick in at-home drinking seemed inevitable during quarantine . No bars , no social events , more time at home — what else was there to do Amy owlett , who with Deborah Engel co-owns the General Store Cooperative , aspace inMaplewood that houses multiple businesses , found herself drinking “ way more than usual , she says .

owlett , aMaplewood resident , wanted to reduce her alcohol consumption without cutting back on the relaxation that comes with making and drinking an adult beverage . She collaborated with Engel , and the two came up with asolution — anew line of products called Speakeasy Cocktails .
Sold out ofthe General Store Cooperative and at SpeakeasyCocktails . net , Speakeasy Cocktails aggregates high-quality , non-alcoholic spirits , seltzers , beer and wine . Far from peddling apple juice and calling it amocktail , Speakeasy searches for drinks with the taste and texture of real spirits .
Though the General Store Cooperative regularly incubates new businesses , giving them the chance to make money and test out products without the overhead of renting their own storefront , this is the first time owlett and Engel created their own brand to sell at the store . We spoke toowlett about Speakeasy Cocktails , and how it ’ s changing the way she and her customers experience happy hour .
WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR SPEAKEASY MAPLEWOOD ? Over the summer , I noticed , personally , that Iwas drinking way more than usual . Isaw that alot of people were in the same boat as me . Ithought , We ’ ve wallowed in the gluttony of quarantine for long enough .’ So , I started experimenting with alcohol substitutes for my cocktails each week . I wanted to make a positive change and get that same unwinding feeling you get from a cocktail . Cocktail hour should be something to look forward to .
