AMOVEMENT
It was aFacebook post that
got Chatham resident LIZ
BERNICH to unwittingly start a
BERNICH
national movement. Bernich, an executive recruiter, saw a
post from her “best hometown friend” in Huntington, Long
Island, about aresident there, Theresa Sullivan, who got her
community tosupport local restaurants and help feed health
care workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I thought it was agreat idea,” the mother of two says. So
on the evening of March 19 on her Facebook page, she asked
her followers if they, too, would contribute money via the
online payment service Venmo to help their community do
the same. When she woke up the next day, she had $800 in
the account.
That evening, she and her husband delivered 50 meals
prepared by Pascarella Brothers Delicatessen to the ER in
the Morristown Medical Center.
By the end of March, FLAG — First Line Appreciation
Group of Chatham and Madison —had raised $78,000 in
donations topay for the meals delivered to workers at
Morristown Medical Center, the South Street Testing Center
in Morristown and the Urgent Care Center atFlorham Park.
The idea ofFLAG has now been picked up by numerous
other communities across the country. “It’s wild,” Bernich
says. “People have just been pitching in, wanting to help.
One friend auctioned wine from his cellar and raised $1,200.
And one family donated 40 snack packs, each filled with a
can of Starbucks espresso, abag of peanuts, Oreo cookies
and granola bars. People are just awesome.”
