editor’s letter
T
he May issue of Millburn & Short Hills Magazine highlights two
topics we really love: mothers, and eating (and on Mother’s Day,
we combine the two, of course). In “Like Mother, Like Son,” our
food writer, Rebecca King, talks to restaurateur Sheree Sarabhaya
and her chef-owner son, Luck Sarabhayavanija. Sarabhaya first
ran the enduring Spice II, and now owns and operates the well-
received Kai Yang in Montclair. Sarabhayavanija operates Ani Ramen locations
in Montclair and Summit, and two in Jersey City; an Ani Ramen is about to
open in Maplewood, and plans are in the works for one in the MUNCHIES
Food Hall at American Dream in Rutherford (expected to open in early fall).
Mother and son talk about how preparing food has shaped their lives, and
their relationship with each other.
On the haute cuisine end of the dining out spectrum, we share our inter-
view with James Laird, the acclaimed chef at Restaurant Serenade in Chatham,
whose food has been described by The Record as “a soft and subtle love song.”
Get to know him in “Rich in Talent.”
Between meals, you can visit one of the area’s many coffee shops. Whether
you’re looking for small-batch coffee from Guatemalan beans or an iced almond
caramel coffee, “Get your Lavender Latte Here” will help you find the cup of
Joe that’s perfect for you.
And while you’re taking a leisurely sip, sit back, get comfortable and read
here. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Millburn & Short Hills Magazine. ■
