he homeowners purchased this home in
Chatham directly from the builder so it
needed some personality. “They wanted it
to have a ‘wow’ factor,” says Uma Stewart,
owner of Uma Stewart Interiors and
Lifestyle in South Orange. Stewart asks
clients to fill out a questionnaire that helps reveal their
design styles and goals; the hardworking couple, parents
to a toddler, “defined themselves as more traditional,
though they did want the space to feel current,” she says.
Using a mix of bold and serene colors, Stewart arrived at
a design that invites visitors to explore every room and
feel comfortable in each.
CUSTOMIZED ELEGANCE
(Opposite) “Everyone loves this paint color,” says Stewart of the pale
jade on the living room walls. The large painting above the couch is
meant to “cement the eye,” she says. “Standing in the foyer, the room is
the first that visitors see, and you need something super strong to keep
the eye from shifting.” The custom carpet is from The Rug Company in
New York. Custom-designed sliding wood doors that can be closed to
afford privacy separate the living room from the den, with its dazzling
cobalt blue. “All the spaces in this house get a lot of sunlight,” she says,
allowing her to play with darker, more dramatic colors. (Top left) The
large foyer remains light and airy-looking thanks to a paler shade of the
living room’s paint color and furnishings that match the style of the
bannister. A custom-cut sisal carpet allows the furnishings to “sit nicely,”
she says. (Top right) The chess table and chairs face the couch on the
opposite page.
