DECISION TO ADD ON As the Thomases family grew, Greg and Jess contemplated moving, but neither of them wanted to leave the neighborhood, and economically it made sense to stay put, so they decided to see what could be done with their existing space. They met with the late Maplewood architect Bob Miller in 2011 and hashed out some ideas. Bob designed an addition for them that is approximately 800-square-feet and includes a new family room and master bedroom. The difference it makes is startling, Jess says. “We always liked our house, but now we absolutely love it.” The new family room opens up to the kitchen as well as the backyard. Greg, who works in the textile business, has a discerning eye and partners with Jess on major decorating decisions including fabric choices like those on the sofa and the chairs. The pillows? That’s all Jess. “I have an addiction,” she says with a huge laugh. Pictured with their parents are Emma, 9, Jax, 7, and Zeke, 4. ➤
