Caryn F. Miller, DMD, LLC 300 MAIN ST. | CHATHAM | (973) 635-4960 | WWW.DRMILLERPERIO.COM BAD BREATH THAT DOESN’T GO AWAY, RED, SWOLLEN, TENDER AND BLEEDING GUMS, or loose or sensitive teeth can be telltale signs of gum disease. Unfortunately, periodontal disease is quite prevalent today, according to Caryn F. Miller, DMD, and left untreated it can prove extremely detrimental to the patient’s general health. One of only a handful of board-certified female periodontists, Dr. Miller cautions, “Studies have shown that people with gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease and have difficulty controlling blood sugar, while pregnant women have a greater risk of delivering pre-term, low birth weight babies.” Normally, the first course of corrective treatment is to remove the plaque and tartar build-up through a deep cleansing called scaling and root planing. Other available treatment options, rendered by Dr. Miller and her caring staff, are gum grafting to treat recession and reduce sensitivity, cosmetic surgery, bone grafting, osseous surgery, dental implants, biopsies, extractions and maintenance using the very latest technology. “I love my specialty because it is medically based and ever changing. It’s now possible for us to grow back bone and gum tissues,” states Dr. Miller, who has been in practice for the past 25 years. A graduate of Northwestern University, she pursued her graduate studies in periodontics at the UMDNJ Dental School. A diplomate of the American Board of Peridontology, she is a frequent lecturer and clinical instructor at Overlook Hospital. Dr. Miller adds, “My office is very soothing and makes people enjoy coming to see us. I have an extremely loyal and friendly staff, who have been here for a long time. We offer TV, music, pillows and a beautiful Southwestern décor.” Dr. Margo J. MARGO J. FREEDBERG IS STILL breaking new ground. For many years, dentistry was typically a male dominated profession. Despite the fact that the disparity is gradually decreasing, the number of women in oral and maxillofacial surgery remains low. Dr. Freedberg prides herself on providing compassion and care in all aspects of her services. “Recognizing that most patients can be fairly nervous, I take great pains to address their unease through a kinder, gentler experience. First and foremost, I understand the importance of addressing any questions or concerns and carefully explaining treatment steps,” explains Dr. Freedberg. “But most important of all, we aim for minimal surgical intervention and optimal patient comfort.” Whether in her private practice at Associates in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery since 1998 or as the chief of the Oral Surgery Department at Overlook Hospital in Summit, Dr. Freedberg confronts her work as a problem solver, diagnosing and treating each case with expertise and attention. After completing her dental degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, she was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society in 1994. Realizing an interest in oral surgery, Dr. Freedberg then began her four-year surgical residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. With a stellar reputation, Dr. Freedberg pra
