editor’s letter
A
s the new
editor of
Millburn &
Short Hills
Magazine, it has been a
pleasure to get to know
the area I help cover. A
few months into the job, I’m struck by
the depth of talent within the communi-
ty, as well as the care that is put into
the town’s many beautiful homes. With
these two themes in mind, our fall issue
presents a lineup of stories that highlight
creativity, both inside the home and out.
In “Talent Training Ground,” veteran
entertainment reporter Ian Spelling
shines a well-deserved spotlight on
Paper Mill Playhouse, the venerable
jewel whose headliners have included
Tony Danza, Chita Rivera and Rob
McClure. All three are interviewed here,
as well as Paper Mill alum Julia Knitel,
who starred as Carole King in the U.S.
tour of the Broadway hit musical
Beautiful and is the subject of our
Q&A “An Iconic Role.”
Madison Schott, creator of Seton Hall
University’s Fashion Club, talks about
the advantages of going to school near
the industry center of Manhattan (“A
Passion for Fashion”). And “On Trend:
Home Edition” features three interior
designers — Blanche Garcia, Karen B.
Wolf and Satomi Yoshida-Katz —
whose work showcases current trends;
Yoshida-Katz also designed our featured
home, which you’ll read about in “From
Spec to Spectacular.” Looking at the
gorgeous colors and textures in these
homes makes me want to climb into
the images and rest in them a while,
but I’ll settle for leaving the magazine
open on my coffee table.
Speaking of creative kitchens, the
folks at Da Nico in Millburn bring flair
to the preparation of Northern Italian
cuisine with entrees such as chicken
breast stuffed with dry figs and mascar-
pone cheese, and homemade black lin-
guini with crab meat. It’s conveniently
located near Paper Mill Playhouse, so
you can have an evening full of originali-
ty and style without ever leaving town.
