Five years ago, when Randolph native Debbi Fine was visiting her daughter in Los Angeles, she noticed atrend:“ Women were flocking to blowdry-only bars to get their hair done,” says Fine.“ These places didn’ t offer cuts or color – just blowouts – and girls were going inacouple of times aweek and coming out looking fabulous. Itwas like no one was having abad hair day inthe entire L. A. area!”
Around the same time, blow-dry bar chains like Drybar and Dreamdry( the brainchild of celeb stylist and Millburn High School grad Rachel Zoe) began springing upincities like New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Atlanta. The concept was simple: for a
flat fee($ 40- $ 45 in the big cities), clients could choose from amenu of glam styles and leave, 30 minutes later, with aflawless, just-stepped-out-of-asalon look. No waiting weeks or months tobook an appointment( which can be the case with asoughtafter stylist at atraditional salon), no lengthy time commitment( compared to the hour or 90 minutes required for acut or color-plus-blowout) and, no hefty price tag. Stylists at the blow-dry bars are like the Navy SEALS of the salon world: They have aspecific mission and are trained to execute it with precision and expertise.
Fine, aformer party and event planner with no background inthe salon industry(“ I was just agirl who liked to get her hair blown out,” she laughs) was sold on the idea. She returned
