ARTISAN BREAD SHOP OPENS

The four owners of LIV BREADS, ARTISAN BAKERY AND COFFEE BAR recognized that while there are wonderful bakeries in and near Millburn, the area could use a local source of artisan bread.“ We’ re just now starting to see a resurgence of all natural bread baking in the states, where artisan bakers are crafting slow-risen, naturally fermented loaves that are more easily digested,” says Elana Livneh, a South Orange resident responsible for the daily operations and management of the shop, along with her husband, Yaniv. They are joined in their efforts by Bary Yogev, a top bread baker from Israel, and Rony Livneh, who has worked as achef in bothIsrael and Europe.“ While all of our items can be taken home, it was also very important to us to have a comfortable café where our customers can sit, eat breakfast, lunch or asnack, and have a great cup of coffee,” Elana says.“ We’ re proud to partner with Counter Culture coffee, a roaster that is dedicated to quality, sustainability and education.” The 20-seat bakery affords a view into the kitchen where visitors can watch the bakers at work. Menu items include croissants, babka, rugelach, challah( on Friday), healthful grain salads and sandwiches.

The site is the creation of Cindy Cooper, a 25-year resident of Short Hills, and it has garnered thousands of likes from followers who appreciate hard-to-mess-up recipes for banana chocolate chip dessert and Super Bowl Sunday veggie balls. HOSPITAL FINDS BENEFITS OF MOTHER-BABY SKIN-TO-SKIN CONTACT

A recent study conducted at OVERLOOK MEDICAL CENTER and published in the Journal of Obstetrics Gynecological & Neonatal Nursing found that an hour of skinto-skin contact between newborn babies and their mothers can be as effective as radiant warmers to rewarm the infants after their first baths. Now conclusions drawn from the research have led to a change in the way newborns at the hospital are bathed as well, says MONICA MYRON, the clinical coordinator at Overlook’ s Labor and Delivery department and principal investigator on the study.“ Now baths are done in the room,” she says.“ Mom gets to see the baby have her first bath. Both parents may be able to give it with the nurse, and the big sister can wash the baby’ s hair. It’ s family-centered.” The new bathing and skinon-skin options are two reasons why the hospital has been certified as a baby-friendly hospital.
