home Hanging Out in Style This chic Short Hills home offers multiple rooms for relaxing and entertaining WRITTEN BY CINDY SCHWEICH HANDLER PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MAUREEN G. NOWAK T he European couple – he’s British, she’s French – wanted to update the look of their newly-purchased older home in Short Hills. “It’s a four-story house, and the original part is from the 1800s, with an addition from the ’50s,” says Sam Ciardi, creative director of Samuel Robert Signature Spaces in Millburn, whose staff includes designers Debbie Bloom and Maureen Kleczkowski. With Bloom’s help, Ciardi met with the couple at the company’s retail storefront and presented design options. The resulting clean, contemporary look combines sophistication with plenty of options for entertaining and chilling within its family room, living room and the large space that’s fondly referred to as “the lounge.” GATEWAY TO COMFORT Ciardi set out to create a dramatic look for the entryway, which he helped accomplish with the wallpaper’s angular pattern, reflected by the wall mirror above the simple Lucite table (at right). Overhead, the chandelier’s circles complement the bold, gold-bronze on the walls. “The cowhide is an easy piece we had that curves around the shape of the last stair,” says Ciardi. Looking left from the entryway, visitors see the living room as well as the elegant yet accessible family room beyond it. “Each room had to feel interesting on its own, but look good together, to provide a beautiful view when you enter the house,” says Ciardi.
