KAWARTHA MILK COMMITTEE TAKES ADVANTAGE
OF LOCAL EVENTS TO CHAMPION THE INDUSTRY
he City of Kawartha Lakes Dairy Producer Committee (DPC) is encouraging everyone to lace up their running shoes to take part in the 38th annual
Lindsay Milk Run on Saturday, July 17.
“It’s just one of many ways for us
to promote dairy products,” says Kurt
Schmid, chair of the Kawartha Lakes DPC.
“Our committee has been sponsoring it
since the beginning.”
The committee helped launch the event
38 years ago, giving the run its notable
name. Today, the event is so well-known
it’s a part of a series of 10K runs across the
province. The committee still sponsors the
event by distributing ice cream to hundreds
of participants. This year, Kawartha Dairy
will donate some of the ice cream and the
committee will purchase the rest, allowing
nine DPC members to scoop ice cream and
T
help cool down runners during the event.
The 10K race and 5K run/walk will take
place at the Lindsay Recreation Complex.
The milk committee is looking forward to
being a part of the event once again, but

doesn’t end at the milk run. All its
members, as well as friends, family and
other local dairy producers, will be at the
162nd annual Lindsay Exhibition from
Sept. 21 to 25 at the Lindsay Fairgrounds.
“During that time, we scoop about 40
11.4-litre tubs of ice cream,” Schmid says,
adding the DPC also sells chocolate milk,
white milk and cheese curds at the fair. “It
takes a lot of people over the five days, but
we have an excellent milk committee.”
The committee also runs an event called
Taste of Kawartha. It is aimed at teaching
Grade 4 students how to make pizza while
introducing them to the other commodity
groups, including grain, beef and pork
industries.
Schmid says the fair is the committee’s
biggest fundraiser of the year, helping
bring in around $4,000, which goes
toward paying for two bursaries for
university or college students taking an
agriculture-related program. Some of the
money is also used toward the annual
Lindsay Santa Claus parade in November.
The committee hands out about 3,000
250-millilitre chocolate milks to the kids
along the parade route, providing the
committee another way to expose the
dairy industry to young kids.
