competencies from multiple perspectives. The
respondent data are collated and compared against
each category, to include the self-rating by the individual. The comparison demonstrates to the target
individual areas where he or she needs to improve,
promotes self-awareness, and, with a trained counselor or coach, can identify unexpected discrepancies
between the self-report and the respondent reports.9
Multirater feedback assessment instruments
come in a variety of styles and formats, ranging
from web-based surveys with instant output reports to paper-and-pencil surveys scored by hand.10
Although not recommended, multirater feedback
can be used for a one-time developmental assessment. Most commonly, however, the assessments are
longitudinal studies conducted over time to allow
the target individual the opportunity to demonstrate
improved ratings through a developmental program.
Feedback can be formatted graphically or numerically, plotted over time, and even accompanied by
coaching from trained professionals. The key is that
