6 MILITARY GREEK LIFE Magazine JAN/FEB 2016

You would think that with all of the momentum on social media, that the word would be out about Military Greek Lettered Organizations (MGLO). Unfortunately, there are still military members and veterans who are unaware of their opportunity to be a part of a MGLO. That means that there is still work to be done. Here are ten things that are working for the MGLOs.

#HASHTAG

TEN PROMOTION TECHNIQUES THAT ARE WORKING

GET AN EDGE ON THE WEB & CREATE A SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE.

For nonprofit organizations, your website and social media are some of the best ways to engage the community and potential supporters. Spread the word by asking your followers to share your links with their followers. Imagine the reach! But, you have to actively post, tweet, and work to create trends.

So, #HASHTAG! For the old schools out there, #POUND! Use it often and encourage your followers and members to do so, as well.

Engage your followers. Ask for input. Challenge them with polls and create infomercials. There's nothing like a quick video to engage them.

Update. Update. Update. Keep your presence consistent. To make sure you are making progress, write down the number of followers you have before and after each social media event. Keep track of what is working and what is not working, including the best times to post. Ready? Set! Post!

WEAR YOUR COLORS.

Wear your pins and all the other paraphernalia. As members of MGLOs, you are advertising every time you wear your “insignia”. Professional dress, jackets, sweaters and pins make a huge statement.

Organizational awareness is important. Your crest, your mission statement, everyone who wears your colors- they all create your brand.

PARTNERSHIPS.

Collaborate with other nonprofits and even traditional GLOs typically found on college campuses. Whether it is to make an event bigger and better or just getting on each other’s monthly event calendar, collaboration is key for any organization that aspires to have a better presence in their community.

MAKE APPEARANCES.

The easiest place to start is your nearest military installation. When you show up, be ready to promote your cause. You may come across potential candidates who are not quite ready or eligible to join. Even if they are not yet eligible for membership, work to involve them in community service and some of the social events. That way, when they become eligible, they are familiar with the expectations of the MGLO.

SPONSORSHIP.

Sponsor a youth sports team or league. Envision a team with the name or mascot of your MGLO on their jerseys! Can you see it?

COMMUNITY EVENTS.

Get involved in a local parade, community festival, or create your own social event to promote your cause. Host a one-day sports competition, stroll and step show, or even a battle of the bands. There’s nothing like a little competition to draw attention.
