Isn't joining a MGLO equivalent to paying to be friends with someone?

~ Al W., Atlanta, GA

Well, if you want to minimize it that way... For any great organization to sustain itself, provide opportunities, and outreach as these organizations are working to, there has to be some sort of income. Membership dues are a way of supporting your own cause- something you agree with. At the same time, you get to socialize with like-minded individuals, network, participate in professional and social events, and provide a service to your community. Another way to think of membership is that you’re putting your money where you actually have some control.

How responsive are the organizations to hazing? ~ Brandon W., Rosston, AR

Each of the organizations have a no-hazing policy. Any act of hazing should be immediately reported. Although, MGL can't comment on specifics to each organization, what we will say is that a potential member's desire for affiliation should never override doing the right thing. The sooner you report the acts, the sooner they can be addressed. Any act of hazing would be detrimental to individual organizations and the MGLO community at large. You should definitely present this queston to each organization you have interest in. You can report acts of hazing using the process established by your MGLO and here: http://fraternallaw.com/contact/anti-hazing-hotline/

If I change my mind about a military sorority or fraternity after I've been initiated, can I join a different one later? ~ Keisha A., Killeen, TX

Some of the MGLOs have stated that if you were a member of another MGLO, they won't accept your application for membership. Currently, this is not the case for all of them. It is up to each of the MGLOs to uphold their specific policy. But, it's more important to do your research and spend time with the organizations to make sure you have the best fit before initiation.

Are there any programs where I can spend time with the organizations to make sure I'm choosing the right one? Isabel S., Chester, VA

Each organization offers opportunities for potential members to meet and Greek or get to know each other. Some even host virtual sessions. You can find out more information by going to each of their websites or local chapters. But, you will have to do the leg work because there is not a program where they present themselves in one forum- yet. From various sources, we're hearing unofficially that there is the possibility of the MGLOs coming together. We're hopeful that something like this will take place since it's beneficial for potential members in their efforts to learn more about the organizations and for the organizations to learn more about potential members in one setting.
