MILITARY GREEK LETTERED ORGANIZATIONS

14 MILITARY GREEK LIFE Magazine JAN/FEB 2016

he founding of Military Greek Letter Organizations (MGLOs) created an air of excitement and profound interest. As military members and veterans become more aware of their options, the possibilities are endless. There are no definitive rules for what constitutes a MGLO,

but there are many commonalities that exist amongst the organizations. For example, the main requirement for joining is that potential members serve or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. With the worldwide experiences found in the military community, the leadership, special skills, and wealth of knowledge- MGLOs have the potential to have a significant impact in their communities.

These organizations are consistently working to provide access to training, workshops, networking opportunities, social activities, and support that is neccessary for current and past service members. With military related injuries, issues, and other events such as transitioning to civilian life, the MGLO community understands what happens during and after military service. Many of the current members are college educated, business owners, or otherwise established in their career fields. The network of sucessful service members, retirees, and veterans makes the MGLO a force to be reckoned with.

Making History

Taking the general format 0f traditional Greek lettered organizations and adding the ideals familiar to the military community, the MGLO has set itself apart in a great way. Although there are still many lessons to learn, foundations are being set, networks created, and history is being made.

So, if you once thought, “I’ll never be able to join a sorority or fraternity because I’m in the military", this is tremendous news! Fast forward to 2016 where military service members and veterans now have a choice of six MGLOs that are alive, well, and thriving. There are currently three sororities for women and three fraternities for men. Because these organizations are seeking to build entities with sustainment power, it’s members must be carefully selected in order to build strong foundations.
