1996
Brown School of Medicine launches the MD2000 Curriculum , a competencybased model , designed to build and assess students ’ mastery of nine core abilities and a knowledge base considered essential for practicing physicians . The abilities are effective communication ; basic clinical skills ; using basic science in the practice of medicine ; diagnosis , management , and prevention ; lifelong learning ; professional development and personal growth ; the social and community contexts of health care ( updated to health equity and racial justice in 2020 ); moral reasoning and clinical ethics ; and problem solving . The curriculum will be heralded as a model and replicated at medical schools in the US and abroad .
2007
In January , The Warren Alpert Foundation pledges $ 100 million to Brown Medical School , and the Brown Corporation votes to re-name the school in the donor ’ s honor . The commitment is only the second gift of its size the University has ever received , and much of it will be used to build a home for the medical school near Rhode Island , Women & Infants , and Hasbro Children ’ s hospitals . The remainder of the gift will create two new endowed professorships and an endowed fund for faculty innovation in medical education ; it will also support biomedical research and create the Warren Alpert Scholars Program , which provides medical scholarships .
2019
The Warren Alpert Medical School becomes the first in the country whose graduates all have the training required to prescribe medications to treat opioid use disorder in any US state . The training has been integrated into all four years of the curriculum to help address the opioid use and overdose epidemic that has gripped the country .

2022
Dr . Mukesh K . Jain , an internationally recognized cardiovascular researcher , becomes the eighth dean of medicine and biological sciences on March 1 . He comes to Brown from Case Western Reserve University , where he was vice dean for medical sciences and the chief academic officer at University Hospitals . “ I hope to leverage my experiences in building robust basic and translational research programs that are aligned and integrated with excellence in clinical care to help The Warren Alpert Medical School and its clinical affiliates achieve even greater impact in advancing standard of care to improve human health ,” Dean Jain says .
