s a rising eighth-grader at Flint Hill School in Virginia, Mr. Woojin Kim's Latin class stands out from all other classes. With hours of studying and homework, most of my classes are tedious. Mr. Kim, however, creates a class full of activities, coupled with an abundance of fun and laughter. Even though COVID presented huge barriers and limited our options, Mr. Kim always found ways to develop creative lessons.

One of his most interesting activities happened on a cold day this past January. This was when we created our Ningat [Snow] cult. Continually walking backward around a tree and chanting "NINGAT, NINGAT, NINGAT" at 8:30 in the morning, we found ourselves having more fun than any group of seventh graders would have had in any other class. From this, we learned about how the Romans believed that rituals could control the natural world. While we didn't successfully get snow to fall, our effort was definitely worth it, giving us a lasting memory and lots of amusement.

Later in the school year, on the 21st of April, we celebrated Rome's birthday by viewing Roman desserts we baked at home, singing songs, and crafting Roman birthday cards. Mr. Kim, a gifted guitarist and singer, shared ancient Roman myths through music and song. We thoroughly enjoyed the session, singing and writing birthday cards throughout the class. As well as learning about the founding of Rome, we also spent time discussing mythology. It was extraordinary and one of the best classes of the whole year.

We were the lucky ones, able to push through the limitations of the pandemic and enjoy our learning experience. Our Latin class provided us with an escape, both mental and physical, to enjoy our friends and learn in a relaxed environment filled with joy and laughter. Mr. Kim made a year full of hardships one of the best school years I have ever had. He always finds creative ways to plant seeds of information in your mind, to pique your curiosity, and motivate you to go to the next level. From the songs he sings to baking cakes, there is always a lesson involved. I am excited to see what he has prepared for our next school year!
