He is one of the few South African winemakers that have the distinction of being a Cape Wine Master. 87% of the winery’s production is Riesling, including Grosses Gewächs, Spätlese, Eiswein and more, but it also produces Spätburgunder Pinot Noir, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Rosé, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Sparkling. Aged for 24 months in French oak barriques. 2013 Sauvignon blanc Pfalz is slightly herbal, straight, pure, bone dry. 2013 Von buhl Riesling Pfalz, sparkling brut. 2012 Dieu Donné Merlot is full-bodied with minerally, dark berry fruit flavors with a soft, broad tannin structure. 2013 Pinot noir Rosé Pfalz recalls red fruits, grapefruit, fresh acidity, good structure, perfect with veal, shrimp, even BBQ pork. 2011 Dieu Donné Méthode Cap Classique blanc de blancs has a creamy, fresh apple and lemon elegance that complements the leesy, biscuity richness, emphasized by a fine soft bubble. highlights from the hunt for the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2014: 2014 Dieu Donné Méthode Cap Classique brut Rosé a delicate yeasty biscuit nose, raspberry and strawberry touches on the palate and an earthy dry mineral finish. scavenger hunt 2011 Dieu Donné Shiraz is a full-bodied Shiraz with soft spicy, white pepper and new leather aromas, complemented by a cedary toastiness. After an exhaustive search, we found them in 10 countries and 9 States. • Brendan Cooke, general director of Operadelaware, was the first to find (and donate!) two bottles: #2 Mollydooker Carnival of Love. Sounds operatic, doesn’t it? Having met Sparky and Sarah Marquis shortly after they started Mollydooker, they remain in contact. Lucky for us! • Paul schulze happened to have two of the highly sought after bottles in his cellar. It helps to be on over 20 wine club mailing lists. • Clark trim and henrik thostrup, owners of Colonial Wine & Spirits in Little Rock, Arkansas, heard about our hunt from friends in Delaware and donated 3 bottles, including the #1 wine, Dow’s 2011 Vintage Port. • Melina tassou, Winemaker and Owner of domaine Kikones in Greece, just happened to find the #96 wine, Domaine Gerovassiliou Epanomi, in her native Macedonia. • One of the scarcest bottles, #92 vecchia Cantina Montepulciano Incanto, was found by Michael De Loach, owner of Hook & Ladder Winery in Sonoma, in a Trader Joe’s on his way home from his winery. Top wines include Dow’s Vintage Port (99 points, Wine Spectator), Helen Turley’s Marcassin Pinot Noir (97 points, Wine Spectator), Guiseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate (97 points, Wine Spectator, 100 points, Wine Enthusiast), Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d’Ampuis (97 WS, Wine Spectator, 99 points, Robert Parker), Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore (96 points, Wine Spectator), and Aubert Eastside Chardonnay (95 points, Wine Spectator, 100 points, Robert Parker) 11
