Feeding the hungry
Newburgh’s House of Prayer provides for neighbors in need
Ciaravino to seek ‘alternative
career opportunities’

After a four and a half year run City
Manager Michael Ciaravino will resign
from his position with the City of
Newburgh. The manager was the longest
to hold the position in recent years,
but has decided
to move on to
different career
opportunities.
In a letter
released
on
Sunday Ciaravino
promises to stay in
the position until
the end of budget
season, through
Michael Ciaravino
December 2018.
“After much consideration I am
respectfully announcing my intent to seek
alternative career opportunities,” said
Ciaravino. “The past four and a half years
have been very rewarding. I have had the
great honor and pleasure of working with
a first-rate team. Together we overcame
many obstacles and accomplished many
goals.”

Volunteers arrive early to prepare the church to give out food to the community.

Chamber Street was filled with people
patiently waiting in the pouring rain for
their chance to walk into the House of
Prayer on Thursday to get their weekly
packages of food. The church was filled
with good smells and warm greetings as
people were handed bags and waited in
line to fill up their plates.
“They offer you so much food,” said
Tom Rowley. “You never walk out of
here hungry, it’s better than a buffet. It’s
a great service to me and to the rest of
the community.”
The idea was initiated by Ralph
Staples, who approached Pastor Vanessa
Lesane from House of Prayer to use
their space to give out the food. The
program has been going on for the
past 2-3 months serving upward of 100
people in the community each week.
This week they served about 125 people
said Staples.
The food is not only given out to
members of the community, Staples also
loads up his car and brings food to
seniors and veterans that aren’t capable
of reaching the church on their own.
“I couldn’t just keep living without
giving back to the community,” said
Staples. “The restaurant said we don’t
want to throw the food away, so we
decided to team up with Pastor Vanessa

and get this going.”
The food is provided by the two
ministries, the House of Prayer Ministry
under Lesane and the Certain Voices
Feeding Ministry. Brother’s BBQ in New
Windsor donates their food each week to
give back to the community.
Carlotta Muse is one of the behind
the scenes women who prepares the
packages of food given out to the
homeless.
“It’s a pleasure to be able to serve
the community with assistance from
others,” said Muse. “We are just doing
God’s will, in the bible you are supposed
to feed the hungry and that’s what we’re
doing.”
