The Balmville Tree lives again!
Councilman James Presutti brought a young sapling to the
Town of Newburgh’s September 10 meeting, presenting it as
a direct off-shoot, and therefore clone, of the famed Balmville
Tree.
The Balmville Tree was the oldest eastern cottonwood on
record in the United States, estimated as started growing
in 1699. Mistakenly identified as a Balm-of-Gilead tree, the
people who lived around Newburgh in the 1800s called it “Balm
Tree,” and the hamlet that sprung up in the area was named
Balmville. As roads and developments sprung up, the tree
was surrounded by stone walls and asphalt, which severely
weakened the tree by the 1970s. In 1976 the New York State
Department of Conservation declared the 348-square-foot site a
public historic park, making it the smallest state par
