Rollover on Fostertown Road
In Brief
Unitarians in the war against Nazis
At 2 p.m. Saturday, the Unitarian Universalist
Congregation at Rock Tavern is hosting a free public
workshop called We Who Defy Hate, a companion
to the PBS documentary “Defying the Nazis: The
Sharps’ War,” to support people of different faith
traditions who want to find places of common
ground and solidarity in the service of social justice
and action.
Rabbi Larry Freedman of Temple Beth Jacob
and UUCRT minister Terri Pahucki will facilitate
the workshop, which is sponsored by the Greater
Newburgh Interfaith Council. Rock Tavern Unitarian
Universalists have continued in the example of the
Sharps by providing material and financial support
to an Afghan refugee family who arrived in New
York last February.
“Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War,” an account
of a daring rescue mission that occurred on the
precipice of World War II, will air on PBS nationwide
this Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. It tells the story of
Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister
and his wife, who left their children behind in
the care of their parish and boldly committed to
multiple life-threatening missions in Europe.
Over two dangerous years they helped save
hundreds of imperiled political dissidents and
Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi occupation across
Europe. To recognize their heroic sacrifice, Martha
and Waitstill were posthumously honored at Yad
Vashem in Israel in 2006 and declared “Righteous
Among the Nations”, an honor bestowed upon non
Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the
Holocaust. Of the thousands so honored,, there are
only five Americans, including the Sharps.

disloyalty, was re-elected with almost 30 percent of votes.
Brian Flannery, another reform Democrat, was
unchallenged for his seat in Ward 3, and City of Newburgh
Planning Board Chairwoman Lisa Daily was re-elected to
her seat representing Ward 4. Another ejected Democrat,
Fernando Cardona, did not run for re-election.
City Councilwoman Karen Mejia, among committee
members charged with disloyalty, resigned in May. At
the time, Mejia described the charges as “nothing more
than a political witch hunt.”
Jacobson countered in an interview with the
Mid Hudson Times that month. “These people publicly
opposed the election of the nominee of the party,”
said Jacobson, referring to himself. “They violated the
committee rules.”
Reform Democrats Benilda Armstead-Jones and
Daniella Jones drew the same number of votes in Ward
1. According to the Orange County Board of Elections, it
falls to the City of Newburgh Democratic Committee to
choose one committee member from the two candidates.
The official primary results are expected to be posted
to the Orange County Board of Elections website by early
next week.
Residents of the Town of Newburgh who have
difficulty going to Town Hall during normal business
hours will be afforded an opportunity to transact
business at two of the Town’s busiest business
offices on Saturday, September 24.
Both the Receiver of Taxes, Deborah Smith, and
the Town Clerk, Andrew Zarutskie, will be open that
day from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The last day to pay school taxes in the Valley
Central and Marlboro School Districts without
penalty is October 1, and the town Receiver of Taxes,
Deborah Smith, will be present with her staff on that
day to afford taxpayers an additional opportunity to
make their payments at that time.
In addition, water bills can be paid on that day.
Andrew Zarutskie, the Town Clerk, has long been
in the habit of providing Saturday office hours to the
residents of the Town from time to time in order to
enact business. His office provides such functions
as the issuing of marriage licenses, dog licenses, and
handicapped parking permits.
Town Hall is located at 1496 Route 300. The
Receiver of Taxes can be reached at 564-4553, and
the Town Clerk at 564-4554.
