The excavator bit into the dirt , scooping up an armful of clayish soil , soon to serve as the foundation for four , new Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh homes .
The ground-breaking took place at a sun-filled ceremony , held Wednesday at the corner of Johnston and Ann streets , where builders are expected to complete construction of the homes sometime next year .
“ This is a tremendous gift that our faith community has given us ,” said Habitat Newburgh Executive Director Cathy Collins . “ We are extremely grateful .”
A crowd of about 50 supporters and volunteers gathered to celebrate . Many were from the various faith organizations that partnered with Habitat Newburgh on the four “ faith builds ,” sponsored by faith coalitions including Methodists and Friends Build , Presbybuild , EpiscoBuild and others .
Citing Habitat Newburgh ’ s mission “ to put God ’ s love into action ,” Collins told the volunteers , “ We could not do our work without your support .”
Deke Spierling , chair of Habitat Newburgh ’ s Faith Relations Committee , led the gathering in prayer that morning . “ We pray for all who need shelter from storms of existence , from poverty and prejudice ,” he said .
Three of the homes will be attached . Once constructed , the three-bedroom houses will bring the number of homes built by Habitat Newburgh to 90 .
The non-profit organization empowers families earning between 30 to 60 percent of the area median income to purchase new and affordable homes , built and rehabbed by Habitat in partnership with homeowners and various organizations . The East Parmenter Street Neighborhood , a 22-house development in a once-blighted neighborhood in the City of Newburgh ’ s
Historic District , is the organization ’ s flagship project .
Two families have so far qualified to purchase two of the new , Ann Street homes . Applications are available to area families wanting to purchase the other two , said Collins . Habitat Newburgh will break ground on four more homes on South Miller Street in November and December .
