“ I don ’ t want to see us become Chicago ,” said Daniel Smith , vice president of 100 Men for Newburgh , on a mission to bring a permanent end to gun violence in the City of Newburgh . “ There appears to be no urgency in replacing or repairing these valuable tools .”
City Manager Michael Ciaravino explained the cameras need to be “ powered up by Central Hudson ,” and the city was waiting on the utility company to make the necessary connections . Residents demand street lighting , video cameras
Continued from page 1 confirmed the final camera connections would be made sometime this week . Some of the poles were “ unsuitable ” for the cameras , said Maserjian , largely due to a lack of space . “ We had to coordinate with Time Warner and Verizon ,” he said , explaining some of the delay .
Eric Newton , a former police officer and member of 100 Men for Newburgh , urged residents to think in terms of change needed from within the community . “ The people doing the killing look just like us ,” he said . “ If you ’ re carrying a gun , your intention is to harm someone else . It has got to stop .”
Community organizer Joe Alvarez said residents need to do more than pay lip service to the problem . “ Be a role model ,” he said . “ We have to stand up and represent what we really want … it takes a village to raise a child .”
