3 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, September 6, 2017 United Way collects donations for victims of Harvey By SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] The United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region has organized a supply drive to help communities affected by Hurricane Harvey. Donations will be transported to Texas by UPS Freight in Montgomery. “One-hundred percent of the donations will go toward supplies for those affected by the hurricane,” said Emily Darrow, senior director of marketing communications for the local United Way. “If someone donates money, we will go buy the supplies.” The United Way partnered with Feeding Texas - a network of food banks throughout Texas - and the Texas Diaper Bank to collect and deliver non-perishable food items, diapers and personal hygiene products to the region. Needed items are being collected by the United Way at 123 Grand Street in Newburgh and 75 Market Street in Poughkeepsie until 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7. Donated supplies may also be dropped-off at the RDAC office, located at 3 North Street in Walden. The following supplies are needed: diapers, pullups, baby wipes, new baby wear, new baby toys, baby hygiene products such as baby wash, shampoo, diaper-rash cream and petroleum jelly; adult diapers and personal-hygiene products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, deodorant and feminine-hygiene products are also needed. Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a Category-4 Hurricane on Aug. 25, striking the Texas Gulf Coast. The storm later moved into southwest Louisiana, dumping 40 to 50 inches of rainfall, causing catastrophic flooding and leaving tens of thousands homeless. At least 60 people have died so far as a result of the hurrica ne. Various organizations in the region have conducted their own drives to benefit Harvey’s victims, including WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which held an on-air fund drive last Wednesday that raised more than $320,000 in seven hours. All of the donations went to the American Red Cross’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The Jewish Federation of Greater Orange County is also accepting monetary donations in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.
