new international arrivals facility
The Port Authority Board of Directors gave the
final approval last Thursday for construction of
the $37 million international arrivals facility at the
New York Stewart International Airport passenger

flights arrive.
J. Jokolakis Contracting has been selected to build
the new wing on the terminal.

we would be an easy team to fight,” said Lee. “The first
year they wiped the floor with us but the second year we
came back and beat them. We hope to beat them on their
own turf this time.”
Lee hopes this trip will show his fighters the
opportunities that can come out of the sport of boxing.
He works with his kids to make sure each of them
succeeds inside and outside the rink.

really excited,” said Elijah Williams, Hook Elite Boxer.
“Boxing means everything to me, it’s my way out of
Newburgh. My goal is to make it to the olympics.”
Williams is one of the regulars at the gym that comes
everyday to practice at Hook Elite. He will be fighting
along with other members of the club in Ireland. The
modest club may not seem like a lot to an outsider, but
for the kids it is a safe haven from getting pulled into the
wrong crowd.
The club is recognized nationally and internationally.
Lee takes his fighters to as many fights as possible
around the country, but with a lack of funding finds
it difficult to get the resources need to travel to all the
competitions.
On Saturday the Club hosted its biggest competition
“Gloves Up Guns Down” to stop the violence in Newburgh.
“I’m trying to get people to stop killing each other and
encourage people to channel that anger in the ring,” said
Lee. A lot of people say it’s still violence. It’s a sport.”
Lee and his assistant volunteer coach Bill Williams
look to grow the gym to bring more kids in that can put
their focus and time on the sport rather than getting
involved in drugs and violence.
One of his youngest boxers Dior Young, 12, has used
boxing as a way to stay out of trouble and stay on track
at school.
“Since I box I stay out of trouble,” said Young. “I used
to get in trouble in school now that I box, I can’t get in
trouble or my mom won’t let me come to practice.”
The club is supported by: Donation Vehicle Program,
Jim Williams, Shapiro’s Furniture, Liberty Street Wine
and Liquors, The Kaplan Family Foundation, The City of
Newburgh, and many other individuals and organizations
who have supported the club.
Hook Elite will host a Free Sparring Session at 401
Washington the Delano Hitch Activity Center, at 6 p.m.
There will be teams from all over New York. Anyone is
welcome to come out to support the fighters.
The club is looking for donations for the fighters trip to
Ireland, for the kids to be more comfortable. To make a
donation or find out more information about Hook Elite
Club contact Leonard Lee at 857-0162.
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is
under an investigation for another potential athletic
department attendance scandal. On October 23 the
Newburgh Board of Education release a public
statement regarding a search warrant issued by
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler.
“This morning the district was served a search
warrant seeking access to district records, including
emails and electronic records related to District
policies regarding academics, athletic participation
and attendance,” said the Newburgh Board of
Education. “The board has worked hard along
with the administration over the past few years to
strengthen our attendance and athletic participation
and to promote full implementation of their terms.
We support all efforts to find the truth behind any
allegations that had led to this investigation.”
Superintendent Dr. Roberto Padilla has declined
to make any further comment outside out the
statement given at the Board of Education Meeting
on October 23.
