The modest club may not seem like a lot to an outsider, but for the kids it is a safe haven from getting pulled into the wrong crowd. The club is recognized nationally and internationally. Lee takes his fighters to as many fights as possible around the country, but with a lack of funding finds it difficult to get the resources need to travel to all the competitions. On Saturday the Club hosted its biggest competition “Gloves Up Guns Down” to stop the violence in Newburgh. “I’m trying to get people to stop killing each other and encourage people to channel that anger in the ring,” said Lee. A lot of people say it’s still violence. It’s a sport.” Lee and his assistant volunteer coach Bill Williams look to grow the gym to bring more kids in that can put their focus and time on the sport rather than getting involved in drugs and violence. One of his youngest boxers Dior Young, 12, has used boxing as a way to stay out of trouble and stay on track at school. “Since I box I stay out of trouble,” said Young. “I used to get in trouble in school now that I box, I can’t get in trouble or my mom won’t let me come to practice.” The club is supported by: Donation Vehicle Program, Jim Williams, Shapiro’s Furniture, Liberty Street Wine and Liquors, The Kaplan Family Foundation, The City of Newburgh, and many other individuals and organizations who have supported the club. Hook Elite will host a Free Sparring Session at 401 Washington the Delano Hitch Activity Center, at 6 p.m. There will be teams from all over New York.
