Fr . Dicks said the Jova family built the Roseton Church .

“ They used the bricks from their brickyard and also built St . Mary ’ s up in Marlborough too ,” Fr . Dicks said . “ It is a great family-oriented community who comes together to worship every Sunday and always has a good time together .”

Bishop Lagonegro said “ one of the beautiful things about Our Lady of Mercy is it is God ’ s family gathered here in this Church for generation after generation . It is a beautiful community that has a very deep love for God and a love for their Church . It was a beautiful day today , the Mass was wonderful and the choir and everything just worked together … It is a great thing to celebrate an anniversary of a Church , I really enjoyed it .”

According to the historic record , Juan Jacinto Jova opened a brickyard in the area in 1885 and employed many Irish and Hungarian Catholics . Jova ’ s bricks , marked with his initials J . J . J ., were used throughout New York City in such buildings as the Customs House at Bowling Green , the Brooklyn Navy Yard , the NYC Public Library , Trinity

Office building and countless apartment buildings .

Jova began construction of the Hungarian-Slavonic style church in Roseton in 1887 and finished it in 1891 and presented it as a gift to the Archdiocese of New York . Jova died unexpectedly in 1893 and is buried nearby in Cedar Hill Cemetery . His sons Henry and Edouard took over the business and were later joined by their brothers John and Joseph . Our Lady of Mercy Church in Roseton celebrated its 125th anniversary in a special Mass last Sunday .

was incorporated in 1919 and survived the Great Depression and WW II but eventually closed in 1968 .

A short essay on the history of the Church ends by stating “ It is now 125 years since the dream of a hard-working brick layer ’ s ‘ Legacy of Faith ’ became a reality . Our Lady of Mercy , although small in size , by the grace of God and with great devotion to Our Lady will welcome people of Roseton , Marlboro and Newburgh as they come to worship the Lord for generations to come .” Jean Marie Dayton said the anniversary was very meaningful to her , as it signifies the community ’ s love for their little country church . Besides their regular parishioners , Dayton said about 40 descendants of Juan Jova and 10 family members of the late Larry Bennett also attended the anniversary Mass .

Dayton said generations in a family are members of Our Lady of Mercy and many attended the Mass .

“ There was a lot of that today ,” she said , adding that “ anyone and everyone is always welcome to attend Sunday Mass at 9:30 am .” The Church is located at 977 River Road in Roseton , NY .

Dayton offered her thanks to several individuals and local businesses for making the anniversary a very special and memorable day : Ray Ostrowski , Patrick Uszenski , Paul Zamenick , The Captain Supply , The Print Shop , Comparetto ’ s Bakery , Novella ’ s Catering and Love ’ s Florist .
