27 trees planted along Liberty Street
By SHANTAL RILEY sriley @ tcnewspapers . com
“ Poems are made by fools like me , but only God can make a tree .”
Yaakov Sullivan read Joyce Kilmer ’ s poem “ Trees ” at a small gathering celebrating the planting of more than two dozen trees along Liberty Street in Washington Heights on Saturday .
“ It ’ s a great day for trees ,” said Hannah Brooks , president of the Newburgh Heights Association . “ These trees are really a symbol of what a small community can do if we work together .”
A red maple sampling stood with its red and green leaves twinkling in the sunlight that afternoon . It was one of five American Red Maple trees planted along with ornamentals , including pear , crabapple and Kwanzan cherry trees .
The gathering offered tree-themed , craft-making activities for kids and plenty of information on tree care . “ All of the ornamental trees will be in bloom in the spring ,” said Conservation Advisory Council member Deborah Dresser , promising an array of pink and white flowers up and down the street .
“ They were chosen because they will not interfere with the wires ,” said Dresser , referring to the low-growing ornamentals . “ The maples will be great for shade .”
The trees were planted with a $ 20,000 grant from the TD Bank Arbor Day
The Newburgh Heights Association and the Conservation Advisory Council celebrated the planting of 27 trees on Liberty Street on Saturday .
This red maple sapling is expected to grow to about 40 feet in height on Liberty Street .
Foundation . The grant , awarded at the beginning of the year , also paid for a small , electric vehicle to service trees throughout the city .
The project was sponsored by the Newburgh Heights Association and the Conservation Advisory Council . The trees , planted by Devitt ’ s Nursery and Supply , are all located between Bay View Terrace and Carson Avenue .
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said the trees were a symbol of the city ’ s renaissance . They also play an important role in the world ecosystem , he said . “ As sea levels rise , the only thing that will curb ( global warming ) is the carbon offset ,” Ciaravino said .
The new trees take the place of unhappy trees - including Norway maples – which for years suffered from disease and stress due to utility trucks repeatedly cutting them back to gain access to power lines .
The trees will be cared for by neighbors living closest to them , Dresser said . She estimated the ornamental trees will grow to 25 to 30 feet in height and the maples to about 40 feet .
