The Newburgh Armory Unity Center
will host a relief-supply drive for Puerto
Rico on Saturday. The supplies will be
driven to Florida and then shipped to the
island, devastated by Hurricane Maria in
late September.
“It is our responsibility as Americans
to do everything in our power to help
those that are in need,” said Newburgh
Armory founder and President William
Kaplan in a statement last week.
“Puerto Rico has been devastated by
Hurricane Maria and they do not have
the necessary resources at their disposal.
They need our help and our community
must answer the call.”
Needed supplies include bottled water,
baby wipes, hand sanitizer, canned and
dry foods, pet food, cots, first-aid kits,
mosquito repellent, blankets, pillows,
laundry detergent, dish soap and tarps.
Walden’s KFM Trucking has donated
a trailer to load the supplies from the
Armory and travel to a pick-up location in

Florida. The supplies will then be shipped
to Puerto Rico.
Reported to be the strongest storm to
make landfall on the island in almost
90 years, the hurricane left the island
without power and communications
when it struck as a Category-4 hurricane
on Sept. 22. Media sources have reported
widespread damage to infrastructure
and the environment. Drinking water
shortages, blocked roads and access to
food was also reported.
“I will use every resource at my disposal
to help make this supply drive successful
and I call on those who are in a position to
help to stand up for the people of Puerto
Rico and do their part,” said Senator Bill
Larkin last week.
Located in the Caribbean, the U.S.
territory is home to approximately 3.4
million people.
Supplies may be dropped off from 2
p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7. The
Newburgh Armory Unity Center is
located at 321 South William Street in the
City of Newburgh. For more information,
