3 Mid Hudson Times, Wednesday, October 4, 2017 Newburgh Armory to host Puerto Rico supply drive Saturday By SHANTAL RILEY [email protected] The Newburgh Armory Unity Center will host a relief-supply drive for Puerto Rico on Saturday. The supplies will be driven to Florida and then shipped to the island, devastated by Hurricane Maria in late September. “It is our responsibility as Americans to do everything in our power to help those that are in need,” said Newburgh Armory founder and President William Kaplan in a statement last week. “Puerto Rico has been devastated by Hurricane Maria and they do not have the necessary resources at their disposal. They need our help and our community must answer the call.” Needed supplies include bottled water, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, canned and dry foods, pet food, cots, first-aid kits, mosquito repellent, blankets, pillows, laundry detergent, dish soap and tarps. Walden’s KFM Trucking has donated a trailer to load the supplies from the Armory and travel to a pick-up location in Tommy McGee hands bottled water to Sen. Bill Larkin at a supply drive for Puerto Rico at the Newburgh Armory on Saturday. The Armory will host another supply drive from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Saturday. Florida. The supplies will then be shipped to Puerto Rico. Reported to be the strongest storm to make landfall on the island in almost 90 years, the hurricane left the island without power and communications when it struck as a Category-4 hurricane on Sept. 22. Media sources have reported widespread damage to infrastructure and the environment. Drinking water shortages, blocked roads and access to food was also reported. “I will use every resource at my disposal to help make this supply drive successful and I call on those who are in a position to help to stand up for the people of Puerto Rico and do their part,” said Senator Bill Larkin last week. Located in the Caribbean, the U.S. territory is home to approximately 3.4 million people. Supplies may be dropped off from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.
