T IMES MID Organizations pair up to help clean up the Hudson River By LINA WU [email protected] On a warm Friday afternoon, a small group of people armed with trash bags and plastic gloves gathered on the Newburgh Waterfront trail to clean up the Hudson River. For an hour and a half, they wandered the grounds picking up litter, debris and anything detrimental to the water system. Last Friday’s cleanup was organized by the Can’d Aid Foundation and the Ball Corporation to clean up and help beautify the Hudson River. Ball and Can’d Aid are partner organizations. As partners, they’ve also paired up to take on six river cleanups throughout the nation. Recruitment for volunteers has been done in person and through the internet. Volunteers predominantly came from the Ball Corporation. Some volunteers found the event from social media and public recruitment events. According to their website, the Can’d Aid Foundation is an organization that “spreads people powered do-goodery through towns, tunes, treads + trails and Love Yur Mama efforts nationwide.” The group partakes in community service work throughout the nation. The Ball Corporation manufactures metal packaging for beverage, food and household products. The household is a colorful array of family photos, video games, animals, and more. Their little dog, Rosco follows you around, curious to know what your business is in the house. The family welcomes you in like you’re one of their own. Despite all the pleasantries, the past few years haven’t been easy. Matthew Roopchandsingh sits in an electric wheelchair every day, hooked up to equipment to help him do basic everyday activities. Even though he is 25, his body is small and weak. His hands are shriveled and exhausted from years of illness. Matthew started to exhibit symptoms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy when he was six. Continued on page 4 Route 300 accident Bob McCormick Winona Lake FD was dispatched to a three vehicle motor vehicle accident on the Route 300 entrance ramp to Exit 7B eastbound on September 27. One vehicle rolled over and two others were on Route 300, Town/Newburgh EMS, Moble Life ALS and Town/Newburgh Police were at the scene. Fire fighters checked all vehicles and disconnected batteries and checked for hazards. Two people were being evaluated by EMS at scene. Town/Newburgh Police are investigating.
