We are Newburgh (WAN), a tight knit
group of local volunteers pulled off
another huge success recently with their
third Thanksgiving Luncheon at the
Newburgh Recreation Center adjacent to
Delano Hitch Stadium.
The Nov. 19 event which was free
of charge was organized by WAN and
Unusual Suspects, with tremendous
support from the Newburgh Recreation
Department.
It was attended by between 800-1000
people, some of them homeless who
were picked up by free shuttle buses
and cars driven by volunteers. There
was an untold amount of food ranging
from Thanksgiving staples like Turkey,
stuffing and mashed potatoes, to everyday
favorites like rice and beans and ham.
In addition to the generous helpings
of food, there was an event MC, a DJ,
donated clothing for those in need and
over 200-book bags filled with personal
hygiene products, furnished by Fidelis
Care.
“We try and work at making the city
better,” Joe Alvarez one of the organizers
said on behalf of WAN. “It’s important to
us that people know there are good people
in the City of Ne
