Newburgh prepares
for a harsh winter

City of Newburgh Department of
Public Works (DPW) worked around the
clock on November 16, when the first
winter storm swept through Newburgh
leaving almost a foot of snow in its path.
Superintendent of DPW, George
Garrison, had his workers prepare the
rusted trucks and old plows well in
advance to make sure they could weather
a big storm. Being understaffed he knew
to be ready for anything.
The challenges with the storm laid not
only in the dense amount of snow poured
down in a short amount of time, but the
time the snow came down. Heavy traffic
was made impossible to travel through
for a regular car let alone a plow to clean
up the roads.
“The conditions were horrible because
the worst part of the storm was during
rush hour,” said Garrison. “There were
accidents, we had trucks stuck on the side
of the road.”
The DPW not only has to work with an
understaffed crew, but they are plowing
and salting streets with trucks from 1990,
1994, 1996. A majority of their trucks are
over 10 years old, newer trucks purchased
with a grant last year are fitted with old
plows that have been welded with scrap
metal as reinforcements to keep the plow
together.
In preparation for Thursday’s storm,
Garrison had his crew make hoses and
gather up potential equipment they
would need to fix the plows and get them
back on the road.
The DPW staff had 9 big trucks to cover
all the main roads of the city, two for each
of the four sections of the city and one for
Broadway. Three to four smaller trucks
cover the small roads the big trucks can’t
cover, and two trucks cover the 11 city
owned parking lots.
Garrison also has two employees
shoveling the sidewalks on 123 Grand St,
City Hall, the Courthouse, and the Public
Safety Building, to keep the buildings
open as required.
After a day of plowing, all the workers
leave their trucks to shovel the sidewalks
of all the properties owned by the city
before they can head home. The first
storm of the season left DPW staff
working from Thursday at 3 p.m. through
the night to Friday at 4 p.m.
You are cordially invited to attend an informational Open House on
the proposed re-powering of the Danskammer Energy Center. To help
ensure as many people as possible can attend, the project team has
scheduled four informational open house meetings over two days. We
encourage you to attend one of the sessions near you in order to learn
more and get facts on the project directly from the project team in an
up-close, one-on-one setting.
Session Agenda
All four Open House sessions will follow the same format. At each
meeting, stations will be set up around the room, staffed by project
experts who will provide information and answer questions about the
project directly to attendees. Handouts with more information on the
project will also be available. Subject matter experts will be available to
discuss topics such as: environmental work and surveys, construction
techniques, project siting and the regulatory approval process.
Acompáñenos y conozca más sobre el
Danskammer Energy Center
