Businesses and friars team up to serve dinner

A family of small business owners
teamed together with the Franciscan
Friars of Saint Mary’s to put together
a Thanksgiving feast for the homeless
community in Newburgh. Vesuvio’s
Restaurant and Papaleo’s Auto Body
sponsored the event at Sacred Heart
Church and handed out over 75 meals on
Thanksgiving from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“It was something we have been
looking to do in terms of giving back,”
said Concetta Cracolici, of Vesuvio’s
Restaurant. “We hope to continue to next
year and serve even more people.”
Cracolici and her family anticipated
having more of a turnout at the event,
but cold weather deterred many from
showing up. A low turnout resulted in
a lot of leftovers, which they handed
out and delivered to members of the
community on Friday.
On the menu for the afternoon was,
turkey, cranberry sauce, vegetables,
yams, dessert, coffee, hot chocolate
and bread. The event was staffed with
volunteers from both local businesses and

news of the event around the community.
“People were very appreciative and
thankful,” said Cracolici. “It gave them
a place to stay for a while that was warm,
they got a meal and they got to interact
with others while they were there.”
This is the first time the two local
businesses hosted a thanksgiving event,
but Cracolici is hopeful it will become a
tradition for years to come.
Small Business Saturday Shopping Crawl a huge success

other places,” said Vickers of
Newburgh Restoration. “We
heard a lot of people saying
‘wow this is what Newburgh
used to be’. It was so great to
see the main street and stores
full of people. We want people
to see that if you’re not in
Newburgh you’re missing out
because Newburgh is worthy
of businesses and growth and
people should be coming here
to spend their money.”
Business owners closed
up on Saturday evening
pleased with the turnout
looking forward to making
the event annual or even
bi-annual. Vickers, Watkins
and Paul’Gaito are hopeful
events like this will be a
stepping stone to create a
business district in the City
of Newburgh.
