Murder suspect appears in court
Continued from page 1
When asked if Johnson had any prior arrests , Winslow replied that his client had “ no adult convictions .”
“ Let ’ s clean up this city and get rid of these thugs ,” Schnekwa McNeil yelled at an anti-violence rally held at NFA following the shooting . Family members , classmates and teachers of the victims attended the rally .
The killings follow shortly after a public uproar over a lack of adequate lighting and surveillance of city streets . The issue was brought to light after the murder of 18-year-old Keyshan Gayle , shot and killed while standing near a broken street light on Fullerton Avenue in August . The city has since replaced most non-working street lights and beefed up a citywide , video-surveillance system .
Council members addressed the gun violence at City Hall this month . “ One of the reasons this person was caught is that somebody shared information ,” said city Mayor Judy Kennedy , encouraging residents to continue to report crimes to the police . “ That is how we catch these people .”
“ Unfortunately , these families in the City of Newburgh are going through it again ,” said city Councilwoman Hillary Rayford , a relative of one of the victims . “ We ’ ve got to fight for what is right … please stand up in these dire times we are facing .”
Safe Harbors held its annual Bells on Broadway celebration , Saturday with a fair in the Lobby at the Ritz Theatre and vendors downstairs in the Green Room . It was especially fun for Jaylah and Jacob Luna , who visited with Santa and Frosty , as well as Issac and Isiah Jackson who were Santa ’ s helpers .
