Neighbors fed up with strip club

Neighbors say they are at their wits’
end with the Mansion Gentlemen’s Club
and Steakhouse. They claim the strip club
is the source of late-night fights, traffic,
noise and general sleeplessness.
“The screaming and the noise that goes
on with these people being intoxicated is
insane,” complained Ida Riewe, who lives
across the road from the establishment
on Midway Drive. “The noise level is
monstrous.”
The strip club, located on Rt. 9W and
Devito Drive in Middlehope, is open seven
days a week, from 6 p.m. until 4 a.m. on
the weekends.
The facility was all quiet on a weekday
afternoon last week. A handful of homes
were within view on nearby Midway
Drive.
“They come up to the back of our properties,” said Riewe, who appeared before
the Town of Newburgh Council on Nov. 2.
“They’re actually on the back of our properties fist-fighting and calling each others
names. The dancers are fighting with

their husbands or their boyfriends … the
noise just rattles through the house.”
Riewe has called the police to complain
about the noise and music, which, she
said, reverberates through her house at
all hours of the night. “They turn it down
and as soon as the police officer is on the
road, the noise is back up again,” she said.

Riewe, who has lived in her home for
50 years, said she had never appeared
before the town board in all that time.
“This is the first time I’ve ever gotten
upset enough,” she said. “We are at our
wits’ end.”
Neighbor George Pabey echoed her sentiment. “During the summer, it’s crazy,”
Pabey said. “It’s like a party.”
Pabey purchased the property just this
year. “I bought this property to live here
and enjoy it myself,” said Pabey, who presented the council with a petition signed
by almost 20 neighbors last month. “I
can’t enjoy myself. I can’t sleep.”
The town’s noise and illumination control ordinance prohibits loud music after
midnight, said Town of Newburgh Police
Chief Michael Clancy.
“Operation of any sound-reproduction
device between the hours of 12-midnight
and 7 a.m., in such manner as to be plainly audible on adjacent properties, shall be
prima facie evidence of a violation,” the
ordinance states, “prima facie evidence”
meaning clear or obvious evidence.
