Honor Flight completes 18th mission

The Hudson Valley Honor Flight ( HVHF ), a 501c3 organization , and a part of the National Honor Flight Network , flew mission 18 to and from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh on Saturday .
The flight consisted of 86 area veterans including 10 of the ever dwindling population of WWII veterans , as well as 74-Korean War veterans and two Vietnam veterans . Each veteran was accompanied by a volunteer known as a guardian . The guardians are responsible for making the veteran ’ s trip memorable and safe .
Jim Thomson , a Korean War veteran from Fort Montgomery was one of the 86 veterans on Mission 18 .
“ This flight changed a sour reflection into a positive experience ,” Thomson said . “ I would recommend it to any veteran .”
With a large standing crowd waiting by , the return flight which was at first scheduled to touch down around 8:50 , was delayed to 9:30 p . m . It didn ’ t matter . The crowd only grew in what turned out to be an hourlong delay by the time the veterans began disembarking the plane .
With countless American flags , patriotic signs and people representing every generation , gender and race looking on , the veterans began making their way off the plane and down the L-shaped walkway formed by the steel portable railings separating them from the gathered crowd .
Joseph , “ JJ ” Romano , 89 of Dingmans Ferry and a WWII veteran as well as Knights of Columbus Grand Knight had an emotional experience during the experience , which also included “ mail call ” reminiscent of the correspondence veterans would get while in service decades ago .

Town of Newburgh man arraigned on murder charge

A Town of Newburgh man was arraigned on Monday on charges of murder , manslaughter , criminal possession of a weapon , concealment of a human corpse , tampering with physical evidence

a false statement to police who were investigating the man ’ s disappearance .
Bail was set in the amount of $ 500,000 cash or $ 1,500,000 bond . Smith remains incarcerated at the Orange County Jail . Smith is next scheduled to appear in County Court on Nov . 15 .
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Steven Goldberg .
