on these dozen properties . “ Water-filtration equipment was offered to us very graciously by the DEC ,” Gaetano said . “ What we ’ re looking for ... is a long-term fix to the problem .”
“ We would like to see long-term solutions that make sense ,” Brand said , and connecting these properties to the New Windsor municipal water system is one possible solution .
In the meantime , Legislator Eachus said the apparent source of the pollution – a retention pond at the air base – should immediately be treated for PFOS .
“ You have , for the most part , determined it is the Stewart Air Base retention pond that most likely caused this problem … ( Silver Stream ) flows out into the Moodna Creek and the Moodna watershed , and the Hudson River ,” Eachus said , potentially poisoning well water as it flows . “ Why haven ’ t we stopped the current poisoning that is going on ?”

The initial phase of the biomonitoring program will assist in the planning for a larger program in the future , Graber said , one that will provide more data on human exposure . Currently , most of the data on PFOS exposure comes from animal studies , he said .
“ We need to keep in mind , we are part of the pioneering work in this field ,” said Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino .
City Councilwoman Karen Mejia said a “ local effort ” is needed to inform residents living “ on every single block ” about the testing program and about the possible illeffects of PFOS . The school district is one way to get the information out , she said .
Graber said a report will eventually summarize the blood test results . The city is now working with state and federal agencies to take a closer look the history of the air base , said Ciaravino , noting its location 150 feet above Washington Lake . “ Now that we know about PFOS … what else has been going on at that airport for the past 50 , 60 , 70 years ?” he asked . “ Right now , the focus is on PFOS .”
Ciaravino said the next PFOS forum will likely take place in December . For testing questions or to schedule blood test appointments , call 518-402-7950 or email beoe @ health . ny . gov .

The lawsuit compared the differences of the two projects , including an increase in density from 104 condominium units to 164 rental units and an increase in local traffic over the last decade .
In an email to the Mid Hudson Times last week , Stillman said he would “ pursue the matter again at the opportune time .”
